Generally, you can obtain a temporary residence permit in Lithuania if your reasons for staying longer in the country involve studying, working, or family reunification.

Duration of a Lithuanian Temporary Residence Permit
When you apply for a temporary residence permit for the first time, the permit is valid for one year. The second time you apply for the temporary residence permit, it will be valid for two years.
How to Apply for a Residence Permit for Lithuania?
To apply for a Lithuania temporary residence permit, you must:
- Get your documents ready. Before initiating the application process, you need to get the required documents ready— keep in mind that different documents are required depending on your permit.
- Fill out the permit application request. Then, you must submit a request for residence at Lithuanian Migration Information System (MIGRIS) online platform. Additionally, you need to attach copies of your documents.
- Visit the Migration Department. After you complete your request with MIGRIS, you need to visit the Migration Department after four months, along with your original documents and copies of the digital documents you submitted. At this appointment, you also need to submit your biometric data.
- Retrieve your permit. Then, after your application has been processed, you must retrieve your residence card. Your residence card contains your personal information and serves as proof of residence in the country.

You must submit the following documents to apply for a Lithuania temporary residence permit:
- Valid passport.
- Marriage certificate (if applicable).
- Proof of employment (if applicable).
- Sufficient financial stability.
- Proof that you have a place of residence.

- Police certificate with double legalization showing you don’t have a criminal record.

After living in Lithuania for five consecutive years with a valid temporary residence permit, you are eligible to apply for a Lithuania permanent residence permit. The permanent residence permit lets you stay in Lithuania for ten years and can be renewed.
How to Get Permanent Residence in Lithuania?
To obtain permanent residency in Lithuania, you must fulfill these conditions:
- You have lived in Lithuania for five years with a temporary residence permit.
- Your family member or spouse is a Lithuanian citizen.
- You have lived in an EU country for five years and in Lithuania for two uninterrupted years.
- You have lost your Lithuania citizenship but have been living there and can prove it.
If you are an EU citizen, you must acquire a residence certificate. This certificate shows that you are legally allowed to stay in Lithuanian territory.
